Discuss audit & assurance

The problem

An audit that arrives as a surprise every year

Audit becomes painful when it is treated as an event rather than a consequence of how the year was run. Requests land late, schedules are rebuilt from scratch, and judgements taken eleven months ago have to be reconstructed from memory. The work is the same either way; only the cost and the disruption change.

Business impact

What it costs to leave alone.

Management time lost
The finance team spends weeks answering questions instead of running the business.
Findings that could have been avoided
Control weaknesses surface in the report rather than being fixed when they appeared.
Delayed filings and decisions
Lenders, investors and regulators all wait on the same set of signed accounts.

Our approach

How we work on it.

Risk-based, not checklist-based
Effort goes where the risk of material error actually sits, which is rarely spread evenly across the ledger.
Planned early, requested once
A single agreed request list, issued early, rather than a stream of questions through the fieldwork.
Findings you can act on
Control observations come with the fix and the owner, not just the observation.

Process

How an engagement runs.

Four stages. You know which one you are in and what closes it.

  1. Planning and risk assessment

Understand the business and its cycles, identify where material error could arise, and agree scope and timetable.

  2. Interim work

Controls testing and early substantive work, so year-end is not the first time anyone looks.

  3. Fieldwork

Evidence gathered against the plan, with queries raised and cleared as they arise.

  4. Completion and reporting

Financial statements, the audit opinion, and a management letter that is worth reading.

Deliverables

What you receive.

  • Audited financial statements and audit opinion
  • Management letter with control observations and owners
  • Agreed request list issued before fieldwork
  • Internal controls assessment
  • Board or audit committee reporting pack

Next step

Talk to someone who does audit & assurance.

A short conversation establishes whether there is a real question here, who should answer it, and what it will take.

  • A person in the relevant practice reads it, not a routing queue.
  • One reply that already contains a view, not a request to book a call.
  • A written scope and fee basis, or a straight answer that there is no work to do.
